As most of you probably know about me, I grew up in a Dutch family. Both my parents grew up in The Netherlands and immigrated to Canada later in life. Because of that I grew up learning a lot of Dutch kids’ songs and lullabies. Every so often I find myself singing the ones that stick out most in my mind as I keep busy around the house. I thought that today I’d have some fun and share some of my favourites with you; and yes I’ll put the translations with them for those of you who have not yet learned the art of reading Dutch. Enjoy these silly songs and let me know in the comments which songs were your favourite growing up!

The first one that always pops into my head is ‘Zag Twee Beren Brodejes Smeren.”  This version has only three verses but there are many more about many other animals doing miraculous things.

Dutch                                                                        English

Ik zag twee beren broodjes smeren                       I saw two bears making sandwiches,
O, dat was een wonder                                          Oh, that was a miracle.
Het was een wonder, boven wonder                     Lo and behold, it was a miracle
dat die beren smeren konden                                That those bears could make sandwiches.
Hihihi, hahaha, ik stond erbij                                 Hee hee hee, ha ha ha!
en ik keek ernaar!                                                   I stood there and I watched them.

Ik zag twee slangen de was ophangen                   I saw two snakes hanging the laundry,
O, dat was een wonder                                           Oh, that was a miracle.
Het was een wonder, boven wonder                      Lo and behold, it was a miracle
dat die slangen wassen konden                             That those snakes could hang the laundry.
Hihihi, hahaha, ik stond erbij                                  Hee hee hee, ha ha ha!
en ik keek ernaar!                                                    I stood there and I watched them.

Ik zag twee koeien bootje roeien                            I saw two cows rowing boats,
O, dat was een wonder                                           Oh, that was a miracle.
Het was een wonder, boven wonder                      Lo and behold, it was a miracle
dat die koeien roeien konden                                 That those cows could row.
Hihihi, hahaha, ik stond erbij                                  Hee hee hee, ha ha ha!
en ik keek ernaar!                                                    I stood there and I watched them.

The second one that I find myself singing is “Al De Eendjes Zwemmen in Het Water” which is basically about how ducks are swimming in the water.

Dutch                                                                        English

Alle eendjes zwemmen in het water,
falderalderiere, falderalderare.
Alle eendjes zwemmen in het water,
fal, fal, falderalderalderalde, ra, ra, ra!
All the ducklings swim in the water,
Falderal de riere Falderal de rare
All the ducklings swim in the water,
Fal, fal, Falderalderalderalderalde, ra, ra, ra!

The third and final one I’m going to share (there are more from where these came) is “Slaap, kindje slaap”. This song is a lullaby for bedtime.

Dutch                                                                        English

Slaap kindje slaap,
daar buiten loopt een schaap.
Een schaap met witte voetjes,
die drinkt zijn melk zo zoetjes.
Slaap kindje slaap,
daar buiten loopt een schaap.
Sleep, baby sleep,
Outside there walks a sheep,
A sheep with white feet,
Who drinks his milk so sweet,
Sleep, baby sleep,
Outside there walks a sheep.
